“Originally from Yemen, I have been living in the U.S. since I was 14 to pursue an education. When civil war broke out in Yemen in 2015, I was told I could not return home to my family. I decided not to let bad events define me, but motivate me, allow me to spread positivity and inspire courage. NOVA has supported me in my journey and positioned me to pursue my dream to become a human rights lawyer.”

Steven Drasner had many roles in his life: he was a teacher, a learner, a sports enthusiast, a traveler, an explorer and most importantly, he was committed and dedicated to his family and friends - leaving an impact on so many through his love, laughter and kindness. Steven Drasner taught Information Technology for than 35 years at NOVA Annandale until his death in 2017. Throughout his tenure, Steven helped develop and refine the IT courses and curriculum at NOVA. He served on numerous committees, edited the Northern Virginia Review and was the 2012 recipient of the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) award of excellence. Establishing a scholarship is one way for Steven’s life to be remembered and to learn of his legacy. This scholarship demonstrates that Steven’s acts of love, generosity and kindness will be repeated; his sense of humor is preserved and his zest for life and love of learning, travel, people, friends and family is carried forward.
